Deconstruction is one of the philosophies that shook the world of the philosophers. For Derrida who constructed the deconstruction, we cannot define what deconstruction is but what deconstruction is not. Language has its own world it has its own life that if we utter, say, or speak we free the language or the words. We cannot own them anymore that they are out of our control it has its own truths. There are three worlds in the language; the world of the speaker, the world of language and the world of the audience or the receiver of the spoken words. It is the speaker who is the one who utters; the one who is responsible for the words he will speak. The speaker is the giver of ideas to the receiver. Language having another world is responsible on its own after the speaker uttered the words. The words may or may not be the truth, depends on the speaker if he/she will say the reality or not but the words will take its course to uncover its reality after being given of its freedom. We all cannot say that our interpretation of words or the text are correct or exact to the real meaning of it. Thus we can only approximate the nearest or the closest meaning of the text we cannot also separate ourselves and our biases in every time we speak or in interpreting, understanding words being heard or read. Deconstruction is different from destruction. It is not a critique, not a an analysis, not an abandonment of all meanings, it is somehow the seeing of the meaning of the text not as of the first glance, but understanding the meaning of the text by seeking its essential message going to the deeper and real message of the text. If and if there will be anything destroyed in deconstructive reading it is not the text, but he claim to an equivocal denomination of one mode of signifying over another.

Anthem 47 was composed by Fr. Boy Celis. The title means: Anthem as song of praise, sacred song, religious, or the songs related to spiritual music. The son was titled in English but the text or the lyrics are in Hiligaynon. The lyrics would like to thank God for the generosity he has.

Nakabati kami sang maayo mo nga buhat kag amon nga nakita sa ciudad sang Ginoo. Sia magapadayon sa pagdampig sa amon sa pagbantay sang aton banwa sa iya nga gahum.

In the first verse the song projects the goodness of God and his being a defender it may refer that trough the good woks of God he will defend his people and their city from adversaries, but he need not to use his power for He is good, for in doing good power is not needed, it may propose a war. There’s no need to use power.

Amon ginakilala ang imo paghigugma samtang yari kami sa pagdayaw kag pagsimba. Ang bug-os mo nga banwa nagtipon sa pag-amba sang imong kadayawan kag imong pagdumala.

In the second depicts the faith of the people to wards God. It is in here that somehow people gave their faith in God in times that they are only as if under in the intoxication of God.

Sa sining kapiestahan amon ginabantala ang imo katarungan nga tanda sang gahum mo. Sa imo kaalwan kag sa imo nga kayo nagpakita ikaw sang Diosnon mo nga kaalam.

Here in the third verse the greatness and the omnipotent qualities of God were given emphasis.

Koro: Sa sulod sang imo nga templo nagapamalandong kami sang imong paghigugma kag imong pagdumala.

The chorus would like to show the summary of all the things tackled on the verses thus in prayer there is God.

There are some contradictions in the text but we are here not to critique but to understand what it should be, as a song of praise it is very important to us to approximate the real meaning of the song. Thus it is free and it can manage to set the reality of its meaning to others as not as literally but as having a world of its own. My purpose in not to destroy but to deconstruct how it was made and from where it was for. Thus it is all my opinions and my understanding of the text as I approximate there may be other approximations but to understand such texts are very hard and needs unbiased judgments.

Language is a very powerful tool in the world of ideas and in the world of communication. In fact, we are able to define ourselves and the world through our language, because everything is language; everything has a meaning. If there is no language, our world will be nothing and empty. Why? It is because the “meaning” is very important, for it tells us of our purpose and our existence. Through language we are able to communicate with other people. As we all know that communication is very important in our lives, because our engagement to others can answer our needs and it will truly help us to become moral person- to be truly person.

In language there are three different worlds but they are connected from each other. These worlds are: the world of the speaker, the world of the text itself, and the world of the receiver or the interpreter of the text or idea. How they are different from each other? The speaker has his own view and he expresses it through language. The language, though it is being used by the speaker, has its own world also. It is because language can’t capture precisely what we are ought to say or the content of the thought that we are trying to express. Plus, language evokes many meanings. It can be understood in different views. The same also to its listener or the perceiver of the language or the words. They, too, have different world, because they have their own perspective of the meaning of the words. Usually, they are interpreting the meaning of the words closely to their experiences.

Deconstruction is not a critique, analysis or a method. When you deconstruct you are not analyzing things, because this will lead you to forget what you are analyzing. Deconstruction is not destroying anything from the text, but it only unwrap the text which opens it to other realization or interpretation. Derrida explains that the text is separated from its author and its interpreter. It is because there is no absolute interpretation about the text. If you are the author of a particular text, you can’t say that you are the only one who has a correct interpretation of your text because it belongs to you. No, the author can’t control the meaning of the text he made, because there is no monopoly or authority on the text. The authority is the text itself and this would always get on the way.  When it is exposed, it will be perceived also by the others and the meaning would always depend on the perception or understanding (based on their experience) of those who perceive the text. When you free the text, it won’t longer yours. It will belong to the wider world. Usually, text can be easily interpreted if we are on the mainstream of it or when it conveys our experiences (both in the past and present). There is no wrong in interpreting the text. But this is not on the point of “Relativism” (indi siya pagustuhanay!), because the text has its “transcendental signifier” which is considered as the authority the will certify the truthfulness of the text.

The Anthem 47 is a song that expresses the reverence of the people to God, because of his mighty deeds and his goodness to them. But I’m just wondering why that the title of the song is “Anthem 47”, which is in English form while the entire lyrics of the song are in Hiligaynon. That’s why when you spot the title, you will really presume that the song is an English song. If we come to think about it, there are also words in Hiligaynon that can be used as the title of the song, which can be more meaningful and relational and can truly grasped the context of the lyrics. For example, “Kanta sang pagdayaw sa Diyos” which is more understandable to the people. But why is it that he did it that way? Maybe because the composer (Fr. Celis) of this song would like to create a different impact out of the title of his song, which he ought to summarize the meaning that he would like to illustrate to the people. An “Anthem” means a song of praising and declaring loyalty to something (God) and the “47” maybe was his age when he finished composing the song or it is his favourite number. So to say, he made it because he intended it that way so that the people will easily remember the song because of its unique title, plus its meaningful lyrics and the arrangement of the voices of the choir, because it helps to evoke the feelings and emotions of the people listening to it, so that they will really like to participate in the singing and to make the liturgy livelier. Therefore, the Anthem 47 was composed so that the people will be aware that they need to participate in the singing, because it is one way of showing God their highest adoration, which Fr. Celis would like to express and to see to all his parishioners everytime they have prayer activities in the church, and most especially during the holy mass which is considered as the highest form of prayer. The title of the song doesn’t really matter. What matters most is the message that it would like to give to the people when they are asked to praise God.

Deconstruction is different from destruction. According to Derrida, deconstruction is not an analysis. It is not a critique, not a method, not an act or operation and not a synonym of destruction. However, it is near to analytical reading, so it means to undo because you commit mistake, sala ka or nagsala ka. In deconstruction there is something you are destroying, but it is not the text being destroyed because the text has its own world of itself. “Waay sing somebody nga amo gid na iya.” Meaning, you are open to the others’ interpretation, because at the very first place we have our own perspective on looking at things. You have to accept that there is no monopoly or domination of interpretation. Because galukso ang text, there are many things you have to consider. What deconstruction is not? No one has an authority. Take for example, in the case of Fr. Celis, even though he was the one who wrote and made the song Anthem 47 originally which is a song of praise and loyalty, he cannot totally say that iya gid na bangud kung mabatian kag mabasahan na sang iban nga tawo, lain mana ila interpretation. Maybe Fr. Celis thought that Anthem 47 he made was a very good and perfect song than the other songs, pero para sa iban tama ka kalain kag pigado gali, so wala mana japun pulos. Deconstruction is not selfish and subjective but it is a reason. You allow the other to think and give their own interpretation, and even though my interpretation for them is not correct and precise, but still it is my own view, perspective and interpretation.

I think that in order for you to be able to create something, you need to be able to break it apart. When I was little, I used to destroy old and useless things. I would see an old wall clock just hanging there and then I would just know that it was hanging there waiting for me to crack it open and look inside. One time I totally dismantled our old radio but it was still operating but not that so well and I thought I was going to get the beating of my life. Instead my father just laughed at me because I reminded him of when he was younger and what he used to do to things. However, deconstructing readings or deconstruction is very different from destructing things, because at the very first place deconstructive reading is not about destroying or destructing a text that you are reading. Deconstructive reading is more of analytical reading. You are reading a text and you analyze it well in order for you to make interpretation and to make the text better.

Anthem 47 is a song of praise and loyalty. The entire lyrics really show us how people give their worship and highest adoration to the Lord. The lyrics tell how the Lord share and spread his goodness, being powerful and love to His people through his good deeds. And because of God’s righteousness and overflowing love to them, they offer prayers of praise to Him. I found it quite hard in deconstructing Fr. Celis Anthem 47. What I did was that I focused more on the title of the song. I was questioning why it was titled Anthem 47 and at the very first place, its lyrics are Hiligaynon. It should be in English. I have found out upon reading the lyrics, that there are wrong usages of words. Anthem means song of praise, sacred song or even a national hymn. So meaning, you cannot use the word anthem as your title because others may misinterpret it. Others may think that song is a national hymn. Others may think that as they see or hear the title, it is an English song, but the big question there is, why the lyrics are written in Hiligaynon? Others are not also familiar with a word anthem. And why Fr. Celis added number 47 in his title? I don’t know why. I can’t capture its used and significance in the title. Maybe he was 47 years old when he wrote the song Anthem 47. Or maybe, number 47 is his favorite number or very significant to him. In my own interpretation, opinion and suggestion, instead of using Anthem 47 as the title of the song, Fr. Celis may use Hiligaynon title, like “Dayawon si Kristo”, “Ginuo nga Makakagahum”, “Magkalipay” and many possible titles. There are lots of interpretations and views the way we read a text. Being the composer or the author of that song or reading is not important, but what matter most is that you need to keep that in mind when you are writing or composing, you have to be willing to accept the fact that others might not get your intended meaning. It is always open for self-interpretation and be thankful that your words helped someone else see something within him or herself.

Deconstruction is one of the contemporary philosophies first used by Heidegger in contrast to Nietzsche’s Demolition. It was elaborated and coined by Derrida. Deconstruction is not defined as “what it is” (because it limits itself) rather “what deconstruction is not.” It is not an analysis, critique, method, act/operation, and not a synonym of destruction. It is near to “analytic reading” and “reverse engineering” (undo). It is not a destruction of the text rather it is “disassembling” it and “constructing” it again. In this way, understanding and awareness of the text’s meanings and loopholes happen.

Anthem 47 is a song composed by Rev. Fr. Esperidion “Boy” Celis. I don’t really know why he entitled this song Anthem 47. All I can do for now is just to approximate it. Anthem is a song of praise, commitment and loyalty. Most of the processional and entrance songs are really songs of praise, commitment and challenge. In other words, most of the processional songs are anthems. With this, I can say that Anthem 47 is really an anthem. The lyrics of the song go this way:

1.)Nakabati kami sang maayo mo nga buhat kag amon nga nakita sa ciudad sang Ginoo. Sia magapadayon sa pagdampig sa amon sa pagbantay sang aton banwa sa iya nga gahum.

Koro: Sa sulod sang Imo nga templo nagapamalandong kami sang imong paghigugma kag imong pagdumala.

(Koro)
What I don’t know about the title of the song is the “number 47.” Maybe it was his favorite number. Maybe it was the 47th anthem he composed. I don’t know. All I know is that he has a reason why he put 47 in the title.

Deconstruction as what I have learned is not a destruction of the text. It is disassembling the text. It is CTRL+Z in the keyboard (undo). It is more of a reverse engineering. With this reason, I did not change or critique the song of Fr. Celis, rather I will show to you how I can disassemble it. It goes this way: (go to this link)

Language is important in us humans because through it, we can express what we think and feel (ideas, thoughts, and emotions). Without language, it is hard to express and relate. Even though language has its own life and world, we use it to reveal our self (Self-Revelation-of-the-Being through language). Sometimes, we can know the person through the words he/she is using. It is sometimes the revelation from the inside. For example: A person always speaks of “binastos.” With this, we can approximate that he/she is a maniac. Language (since we first become conscious) has been our tool in revealing our self to others. And so, we cannot avoid using language in our everyday life. In relation to deconstruction, the more we use language, the more we can use deconstruction. When we deconstruct something, we can still deconstruct the “deconstructed.” The more language we have, the more language we can deconstruct.

When we say authority, we mean it as a power to take the lead or to rule over the others. But usually we are being misled by this kind of perspective. Sometimes, we define authority as our way to manipulate the life of others. We are using our authority to promote comfort on our part and never minding others even if they will suffer out of it.  We are using also our authority to bribe others just to have whatever we want from them, but if they won’t heed our wish, we could use our authority to scare them up or to threat their lives so that they will have no choice but to follow our will.  But in the other sense, “Authority” is a gift given to us. It is supposed to be an opportunity for us to promote goodness not only for our own selves but for others as well. Our authority comes from the others; it doesn’t originate from or within us, because they believe in our capacity and in our will to promote peace and order in our society. That’s why authority or power should be used wisely and not in an abusive manner. It is for good; therefore it must bear and spread goodness to all. But if we are not aware of this and when we are just using our authority not based on its exact purpose, there is a great possibility that it could lead us to the wrong track. It can make us a “MONSTER” that can destroy everything.

Nietzsche’s critique to religion would tell us that our faith or religion can manipulate our perspective in life. So to say, it can control us. As we all know that the church is one of the most powerful organizations in the whole world, because it speaks about faith and relationship of the people to their God whom they considered as the main author of all the seen and unseen things of this world. God sent forth his disciples throughout the world to preach his good news and to build His church so that every evangelized people can praise Him and in order for them also to be guided by His word so that they could attain fruitful life here on earth and everlasting life in heaven. These disciples of God also blessed other disciples by giving them authority to continue what they have started as the church for the people of God. And they were called priests. A priest is a man who holds the place of God. He is a man who is invested with all the powers of God. That’s why the leaders of the church are given the authority to lead the people of God. They are expected to be the promoters of peace and love in the society. It is because a priest is really expected by the people to be like God. That’s why they are being respected and people pay homage to them. Every decision they made is usually respected and followed by the people.

But sometimes, this authority or power of theirs is also abused by themselves. They are using their power or even the name of God to bribe people or to scare them when they don’t follow instructions that are given by the church. They don’t sometimes listen to the plea or suggestions of other people, because they believe to themselves that they are persons whom God has chosen to be His own. That’s why they also believe that they are righteous and every decision they make is always correct and no one should question them because they made people to believe that it is the spirit of God that is working on them that’s why they won’t get wrong in doing things, because God made no mistakes at all. This kind of perspective of our priests serves as a veil that hinders them to see the reality. They make it also as their blanket to cover up all their lapses so that the people won’t notice them and they can remain their good image before the people. And if ever people will insist to question their deeds, they will then use God to scare them up and telling them that they will be punished by God because they are complaining and against His will. But this is not actually the authority that God has given to his people or what He wants them to practice, because as what God had said “I have come not to be served but to serve”. God gave his people the authority not for dominion but for serving His people. That’s why I’m pity to those leaders of the church who are using their authority or even the church herself just to attain earthly things. For they not only committing sins before the people but also to God.

As a seminarian, aiming to be a good priest someday (if God wills it), I consider Nietzsche’s critique to religion very helpful to me and in my future ministry, because it serves as a great reminder on how to live our religion correctly which is patterned to the will of God so that it can truly lead the people going to the right track of what their faith has promised to them; that God will save them and will grant them fruitful life in His kingdom.

Prosperity, industrialization, technology, and much advancement in our society create good and bad effects in our lives. Places were developed medicines were created and life became very easy. In the extent, machines, telecommunication and computer mediated communication made very affordable that it became very common. In all of these advancements our economy can be productive and improve more in the expectations of the world. These are the advantages of world’s material advancements, yet the bad effects of these are materialism, meaninglessness of life, unstable life style, and corruption of youth through pornography and pervert acts brought by liberalized frame work of mind. These are “god’s death wreath.” In the critique to religion of Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche the observation on Europe’s situation in his time was the death of God. God was being killed slow and continuous by selfishness, materialism, and fake source of faith. Many people were selfish, greedy and restless for the security of their lives. Many worshiped their belongings and material possessions not minding others who are unfortunate, push down those who are weak just to bring their own selves into the top. Some people kill to put their selves in to the position having the power and the authority.

The observation of Nietzsche in Europe in his time is obviously clear and happening in our time and here in our country. Materialism, worshiping power and money for selfish motives, and immorality such as pornography, and abortion as killing of the unborn are all present and prime problems of our society. God is being tortured to death through all this inhuman but human made effects by human acts. We all made these, we slowly “kill God” by our selfish actions. Our spiritual lives are covered by pretentions of peace and of faith. We sometimes go to mass to let others see that we are religious, after we destroy our community as we corrupt the wealth of our government as for corrupt politicians. Communication was made for us to connect and to talk with each other, but there are people who destroy others through computer or making lies, wrong judgments, and destroying the name of others by posting in the net. If all of us were created in the image of likeness of God doesn’t it that we also destroy god’s name if we murder the name of others?. Science is also very beneficial to us for the medicine and the drugs that are healing our bodies, but if we use Science to destroy Gods creation in the image of the unborn doesn’t it that we are killing the creator not permitting his creation to exist in this world through abortion?. If we go to mass and if we see our enemies do we really forgive each other in the giving of peace?, why don’t we have forgiveness and promote peace.

Most of us in our country are Christians and we are almost have our own god why don’t we use our being faithful, pray and act as we live the life of good persons. We need to struggle and to share our lives to others to create a peaceful humanity.  Through the example of our gods as we have our different beliefs and religions we need not to fight with each other we need to respect and understand and correct each other’s wrongs. Let us be influenced by our being faithful for our faith to our God is leading us to be good, thus we as we live in God’s presence we also incarnate Gods actions.

In today’s generation, we are living in a highly modernized way of living. High technology is our trend nowadays. Each country and each individual are competing and struggling for them to achieve success and wealth in life. Because of this, people are becoming more materialistic. They have been busy in making their own lives more progressive, for them to become richer. They have been focusing on material things that can give and offer them pleasure and satisfaction. They are being over controlled by the fortune and richness of this world. These advanced technologies have benefits to offer in the lives of people; however these will also ruin and destroy their lives. Indeed, these high technologies and the craving of people for wealth badly influenced and changed their lives. One of the greatest bad effects of this sad reality is the weakening and loosing of spirituality and religiosity of each individual. People have no time already to attend masses or even offer a short prayer of thanksgiving. Instead of going to masses, attend the faith sharing or say the rosary, rather they go to ‘Bulangan’, ‘Madjungan’, have a shopping, playing computer games or texting all the time and giving most of their time in their business or job. They don’t have already sacred space or time to communicate with God. Because of this, their relationship with Him becomes weaker and lifeless. They don’t have already developed an intimate and closer relationship with Him.

Yes, some people have become successful, lucky and blessed enough in their lives. They have received so much blessings, graces and even good things that are unexpected to come in their way. They have stable and good jobs. They have a happy and blessed family. They have able to overcome problems in life. They are being cured from a terrible and serious disease. They have all what they want in life. However, the question is, are they able to give thanks and praise God for all the goodness He has bestowed on them? Are they able to live a righteous and virtuous life which God wanted them to live? Are they able to live a life which is according to the will of God? Are they able to share their blessings and give service to others? These are the important questions that they have to reflect upon and answer within themselves. Nowadays, as what I have observed, people are becoming unfaithful. They are not faithful enough in expressing their faith and love to God, especially, as we live in a world of globalization, wherein people are more attracted and even deceived by these material things. There is no doubt, they will really change. In their faith, attitudes or moral conduct, in dealing with each other, in their way of living and many more. Their entire self has changed most especially their spirituality. They don’t anymore recognize God in their lives. As if God is no longer existing and acting upon their lives. And for them, “God makes no difference in life. He is not influential in their way of life.” People don’t live anymore a life which God has taught them, a life which is full of trust and faith, virtuous, pleasing, meaningful, purposeful, and joyful and a life of service as well. Because of the hardness of heart of people and their unfaithfulness to God, their life is full of meaninglessness, emptiness and worthlessness. They don’t live or put into action the word of God which they heard. They are only more on words and not in action. Others are attending masses and project to others as a religious person, however these actions and deeds of them do not reflect on how they live. They are becoming selfish and greed. They are tactless in their words. They don’t know how to forgive. They are not afraid of doing bad or immoral acts against one another. There are increasing numbers of murderers, drug pushers and kidnappers. People do not anymore consider the sacredness of marriage and sex. There is no more true essence of love, peace, unity, care and service with one another. These scenarios show that God does no longer exist, that God is dead. All these dreadful and bad happenings in today’s generation are caused by the unfaithfulness and infidelity of people.

Have you observed and not threatened or moved of all the bad occurrences that are happening today. There are continuous natural calamities, killings, injustices, war among countries and many more. These are God’s ways and invitation for us to repent for our sins and also to recognize Him again in our lives. We have to be grateful because God has become compassionate and forgiving to us. His love for us is complete. God is alive!

Have you saw a monster before? How do you know if that is a monster? If that so then, that was God? When we are a child, everytime we made a mistake our parents usually told us “mangakig cmu si Papa Jesus”. It remains in our mind that Jesus is someone to be feared of. He is someone like a monster or someone that is more than human.

The bible said in the part of the Genesis that God was really a terrible God. He is someone to be feared of. He punished the people who disobeyed him. This is also why our parents everytime they scolded us they always mentioned of “akigan ka gid ni Papa Jesus”. Bible tells us that God was a supreme being. And as our creator, we should follow His commands if not He might punished us a kind of punishment that we don’t expect the same as the unexpected sanctions of Fr. Doming if someone commit mistakes within the rules and regulations of the academics. Fr. Doming can be compared as God in the Academic Life Formation here in the seminary.

When we are still a child we grew up having that mindset that we should follow what God told us in His Ten Commandments and the Bible. This is the custom and practices of our religion. It speaks about our faith to God. Until now we fear God although we know now that He is a merciful God.

There are many stories in the bible which God shown His might. There are many circumstances that he punished people yet before He punished them He first sends a prophet to preach for them. By the time they won’t listen to what the prophet have told them that will be the time that God will do punishment. Punishment is only for the unjust person. God becomes only a terrible monster when He punished people.

There are also some circumstances in which God becomes a merciful God not anymore a monster. Remember the story of Jonah? God wanted Jonah to preach in the city of Nineveh because people there were not anymore worshiping God. He will destroy Nineveh if people won’t change. By the time Jonah accepted God’s offer to him to preach in Nineveh and the people there brought back their faith to God. Finally God did not pursue of destroying Nineveh.

God becomes only a terrible monster because of such punishment which man cannot do. Like what God did in Sodom and Gomorrah. He destroyed the city of Sodom and Gomorrah by a hailstone. He is really a terrible monster. But do you know if what was the event happened before God destroyed the city of Sodom and Gomorrah? Abraham and God were in dialogue. Abraham asked God, if there are 45 just people would you destroy the city of Sodom and Gomorrah? God answered “for the sake of 45 I won’t destroy it. Until Abraham asked God for the six times, if there are 5 just people… God answered “for the sake of five I won’t destroy the city of Sodom and Gomorrah. Yet God destroy the City of Sodom and Gomorrah because only the family of Job is the one who is just in those cities. God is so merciful so as very terrible God.

Being a monster does not mean that you are completely bad. A monster only attacks because he was hurt by someone. But if you make friend to a monster, he will make friends also with you. Many times in our life we hurt God. Many times also that some were punished because of too much hurt which our God experience. Yet God remained a merciful God, through generations by generations. He remained faithful to his covenant to our forefathers.

God did not mean to be a monster in our eyes. It is by our fault and mistakes that God becomes monster. A monster God is only exist because also of us, people. There will be no monster God if we only do what is right and pleasing to His sight. He punished us because of our fault and mistakes yet we are still living because he remained merciful.

Come to think about our God. A terrible monster yet remained merciful. Who can be compared with such kind of descriptions? Nobody can be compared to our God. People cannot be a monster and at the same time a merciful one. People have to choose to be a monster or to be a merciful person. Our society needs not a monster and at the same time merciful. Our society needs God. And the only thing for us in order to fulfill the needs of our society is to live in God’s presence. Having that mindset that we need to follow what God wanted us and by that we cannot be a monster and at the same time as God but we are near to be like that.

The power is in our hands. It is only through us that we can help our society right now. As much as possible we need to make wise decisions not only for ourselves but also for others. Let us always be a terrible monster a monster for others who will lead our society to peace and to have a harmonious life in the presence of God.
